Privacy & your data

The short version: if you give me your email address, I use it to send you the free download you asked for and the occasional honest tip about coaching in America. I don't sell it, I don't share it with camps or agencies, and you can leave in one click from any email.

Who's asking

This site and the book behind it are run by one person, writing as Pete Ashton. It's an independent guide — not affiliated with, paid by, or endorsed by any camp, agency or visa sponsor. Questions about your data: hello@coachthestates.com.

What I collect, and when

That's it. I don't ask for your name, your address, your date of birth or your phone number, and there's nowhere on this site to give them to me.

Why I'm allowed to email you

Your consent — given when you tick the box and submit the form. You can withdraw it at any time, and withdrawing it is as easy as giving it: one click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email. You don't have to tell me why, and nothing else about you is kept once you go.

Who else touches it

Nobody else. In particular: no camp, no agency, no visa sponsor, and no advertiser ever gets your email address from me. The whole point of this project is that nobody's paying me to point you anywhere.

How long I keep it

Until you unsubscribe, or until you ask me to delete it — whichever comes first. If you've not opened anything for two years I'll clear you off the list anyway; a list of people who aren't reading isn't worth keeping.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask me to show you what I hold, correct it, delete it, or send it to you in a portable file. Email hello@coachthestates.com and I'll do it — there's no form to fill in and no fee. If I ever get it wrong, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Age

The signup boxes are for over-18s. That's not me being awkward: the J-1 camp programmes this site is about require you to be 18 by the time you travel, so a mailing list aimed at under-18s wouldn't be much use to either of us. If you're 17 and planning ahead — read everything on the site for free, it's all here, and come back for the list when you're 18.

Cookies

This site sets no advertising or tracking cookies, which is why there's no annoying banner. The analytics are cookieless and the signup form is a plain form.

Last updated July 2026. If this ever changes materially, the change goes here and I'll say so in an email rather than quietly editing the page.
